The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service manages Reading First, which trains 700 elementary teachers in effective reading strategies each year. Since the summer of 2004, over 2,300 teachers have completed the training.
Now in its 27th year, the Center for Research on Learning received nearly $12 million in new grants in the last two years.
The Beach Center received continued funding for the next five years from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research -- a total of $3,750,000. This core funding preserves the longest line of research in the country on the effects of policy on families.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded the Center for Research on Learning nearly $9.3 million for Gear Up: Pathways to Success, a district-wide program under way in Topeka, Kansas Public Schools designed to increase the quality of instruction received by every student.
TRIO and Educational Opportunity Programs received over $4.6 million in funding for the next five years to provide programs for over 4,000 youth and adults each year. Students from F. L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kansas who are participants in these programs were offered over $900,000 in academic scholarships for post-secondary education.
Special education faculty members, Wayne Sailor, Ann Turnbull and Rud Turnbull have been named three of the 100 most influential people in the field of mental retardation.
Through its newly renovated website, www.beachcenter.org, the Beach Center now sponsors a virtual community of practice on early childhood family support.
On a scale of 1-5, faculty in the School of Education received averages of over 4.4 in ratings on their teaching.
All initial and advanced teacher education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and are approved by the Kansas State Department of Education.
Doctoral programs in counseling psychology and school psychology are accredited by the American Psychology Association. The Counseling Psychology program was awarded a full seven years of accreditation, the best possible outcome.
The Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs has accredited the School of Education athletic training program.
