Retention Policy

Once admitted to the Athletic Training program, the student will be evaluated each semester. As long as appropriate progress is being made, the student will be allowed to move on to the next semester. If progress is unsatisfactory in either clinical or classroom performance, the student will be placed on probation for one semester in order to remedy any deficiencies. If the deficiencies are not remedied in the time frame allotted, the student will be dropped from the program. The Program Director shall monitor student progress from one semester to the next.

Classroom: The student shall maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 while enrolled in the program. Students shall also receive a minimum 2.5 GPA for each semester. Students must earn a minimum ‘B’ in all core AT courses. I they do not earn at least a ‘B’ in a core AT course they must make arrangements with the instructor to complete any deficiencies. Failure to adhere to these academic requirements will lead to placement on probation or suspension by the School of Education. Students are placed on probation if the previous semester of work is lower that 2.5 or the overall grade-point average is lower than a 2.5. If overall improvement in a student’s grade-point average is not achieved during the next semester, the student must confer with the associate dean for undergraduate studies, and an extended probation or suspension may follow. Suspension and/or probation also may result from excess absences from class, failure to complete the field experiences satisfactorily, or from academic dishonesty.

Clinical: Students must demonstrate mastery of each competency skill to his/her ACI with 80% proficiency. Each competency skill must be demonstrated to pass and receive credit for this course. Students that do not demonstrate all the assigned skills for this particular course will receive an “incomplete” for the semester. Students are not permitted to progress to the next level of the program and sequence of courses until all assigned competencies have been demonstrated with 80% proficiency and a grade of “incomplete” removed from his/her record. In addition, each final proficiency evaluation must be passed with a passing point of 80%. Scores with a rating of “poor” or “fail” on the proficiency evaluation will not be accepted. These respective areas must be redone to a level that is satisfactory to the ACI and the Program Director before progression to the next level is allowed. Students who do not accomplish these established criteria will not be granted progression to the next course.

Progress: The student athletic trainer is expected to meet appropriate deadlines for the completion of proficiencies and other responsibilities for membership in the Athletic Training Education Program. Failure to meet the defined deadlines is grounds for probation or dismissal from the program.

Appeals: Students may appeal decisions if they feel they are not being treated fairly. Appeals of decisions should be made in the following order; 1) Program Director, 2) HSES Department Chair, 3) SOE Associate Dean, and 4) SOE Dean.
