A Community Health degree from the University of Kansas is the program for you. The University of Kansas Community Health degree is a rigorous and dynamic course of study requiring 54-56 general education hours, 46 comprehensive major hours, 16-18 elective hours and a senior internship.

Our four-year program develops students' critical thinking and leadership skills and the senior internship provides students with real-world experience and future employer contacts. Classes are taught by experienced, student-centered faculty. Content covers the National Health Education Standards, the 10 Content Areas of Health and the 6 Adolescent Health Risk Factors.

Freshman/Sophomore Courses - Required courses include a solid base of science and math, language arts and communication, behavioral and social sciences, arts and humanities.

Junior/Senior Major Courses - Required courses include: School & Community Health, Materials & Methods of Health Education, Community Leadership, Cognitive Development, Peer Advising, Principles of Nutrition, Health & Human Sexuality, Drugs in Society, Consumer Health, Environmental Health, Aging, Strategic Communications, Administration of Health Programs, and a Senior Internship.

Graduate Work - For students wanting to pursue graduate work after their Bachelors of Science in Education Community Health degree (B.S.E.), the University of Kansas offers masters degrees in Health Education (MSE) (Lawrence campus) and Public Health (MPH) (Kansas City campus).

Note: Students presenting current first aid certification in lieu of HSES 248 must take an additional two hours of course credit for graduation.  Acceptable certification is: Standard First Aid with CPR/AED-Adult & Infant CPR, a 9 hr course, American Red Cross, or Heartsaver  First Aid with CPR/AED-Adult & Infant, CPR, 7 ½ hour course, American Heart Association.  Fall applicants for Spring admission, must submit a copy of the current certification to ROB 161, Attn: Undergraduate Coordinator, on or before STOP DAY.  Spring applicants for Fall Admission, must submit current certification on or before the first day of fall classes. Failure to do so will result in non-acceptance into the program, and administratively being dropped from Community Health flagged courses.

Note: Students wanting to become registered dieticians CAN NOT become a R.D. (Registered Dietician) with a community health degree. To become an R.D. a student MUST HAVE an undergraduate degree in nutrition from a ADA university approved nutrition major, in order to sit for their R.D. registered dietician license. Community Health majors can only work as nutrition educators for health food stores, food associations, etc.

Checklist for a Community Health Degree

[ ] Freshmen/Sophomores - Call 864-7096 to schedule an appointment with a pre-education advisor. Failure to do so may result in your taking classes you don't need.

[ ] Community College Students - Access community health degree requirements from the HSES Dept website, and course transfer eligibility requirements from www.admissions.ku.edu/credtran as you take your community college courses. Failure to do so may mean extra semesters to graduate. Please note, students cannot exceed 64 hours from a junior college toward their program.

[ ] Transfer Students - IMPORTANT - BEFORE enrolling at KU, call 864-7096 to schedule an appointment with a pre-education advisor. Failure to do so may result in your taking classes you don't need.

[ ] All Students – Grade Point Average (GPA) is critical. – The School of Education and HSES Dept. require a “minimum” 2.75 cumulative GPA (includes ALL community college transfer hours), for admittance into the Bachelor’s of Science Degree Program in Community Health. Students will not be admitted without a “minimum” 2.75 GPA.
