We are now taking applications for Sports Science and Community Health
The Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences offers the following degree programs: Athletic Training, Community Health, Health & Physical Education Teacher Licensure, and Sport Science. (The Sport Science program has emphases in Exercise Science, Pre-Physical Therapy & Sport Management.)
PROCEDURES FOR ADMISSION
Candidates for the Athletic Training, Community Health and Sport Science majors are reviewed for admission twice a year. Health and Physical Education applications are accepted in the Spring semester only. On the Course Requirement sheets, shaded courses denote minimum requirements for admission. The deadlines for applications are early February and mid September. Materials are to be submitted online. Admission is selective; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
Students will be sent letters notifying them of admission decisions by mid-March and mid-October. Students who are accepted are admitted for the semester following their application.
An applicant who is denied admission can contact the HSES Undergraduate Coordinator to discuss the reason(s) for denial. Students are also encouraged to contact a pre-education advisor to discuss alternatives. Call the School of Education’s Welcome Center, 208 Joseph R. Pearson Hall at 864-3726.
Transfer students must contact the Office of Admissions (785-864-3911) or visit www.ku.edu/admissions/ to obtain a required application to KU.
ONLINE APPLICATION INFORMATION FOR
All HSES Undergraduate Majors
Go to http://soe.ku.edu/prospective-students/admissions.php for the following items: introductory and instructional information, online application, application worksheets, and FAQ’s. If you are unsure of the process please ask for assistance BEFORE submitting your application. Applications may be submitted only one time. It is strongly recommended that you meet with a pre-education advisor before you complete your application. You may contact the advising staff at soeadvising@ku.edu. It is also highly recommended that you download the appropriate “worksheet” for your program and become familiar with the required information.
Prepare all sections of your application, using the worksheet appropriate for your program, before beginning the online application process. You may find a copy of your ARTS form (or transcripts from transfer schools) useful to complete the section regarding required core coursework. You may obtain an ARTS form in the Welcome Center, Room 208 JRP or through the KYou Portal after you login.
After you have entered all required information please preview your work and make any changes before submitting electronically. Print a copy of the application for your records and gather together any documents that need to be submitted via hard copy. These documents may be submitted to the Welcome Center, Room 208 JRP.
ADDITIONAL APPLICATION INFORMATION FOR
Health & Physical Education Teacher Licensure
If you have not taken and passed the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) you will need to sign up immediately. You may find more information at www.ets.org/praxis or schedule a test date at the Watkins Testing Center, 785.864.2772. Passing scores are as follows: 172 Math, 173 Reading, 172 Writing.
Attend an Admissions Information Session. These sessions provide details on completing the application successfully.
Download the “Letter of Support” form and contact the individuals who will serve as your references. It is recommended to begin the process early as your references will need to get the hard-copy form, have time to write to your qualifications and send the documents to the School of Education no later than February 1.
Essays should be written in a word processing document, edited for spelling and grammatical errors, and be ready to cut & paste into the textboxes provided. There is limited space for your essay, approximately one page, double-spaced, so plan your responses accordingly.
