Checklist for Licensure Application Process
To Be Completed During Final Semester of Initial Teacher Preparation Program
- Get a School of Education version of your ARTS form and confirm that passing PPST scores appear in the top right corner. If they do not show, bring your original test results to the Welcome Center, 208 JRP.
- Get fingerprinted (if you don’t already hold an emergency substitute certificate). The fee for processing fingerprints (background check) is $44 and your local police station may charge a small fee of $5-10. Fingerprints take 3-4 weeks to process and clearances are effective for only six months, so if you are interning in the Spring semester, get fingerprinted between mid-January and March 1.
- Take the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) and Subject Area exams around
six months before completing the program to allow time for a re-take if necessary.
Only one level is required for the PLT, so take the level most appropriate for you (K-6, 5-9, or 7-12).
Each exam is 2 hours long, so most of you should be able to take these on the same day, which is cheaper than
taking them separately. Register online at least a month in advance at www.ets.org/praxis.
Find more detailed information on these exams at http://soe.ku.edu/licensure/exam_info.php.
When you receive the scores, you will bring or mail the original to Alisa so we can make an "official" copy for our files at KU. This is required for Kansas licensure.
- Complete the online application for Kansas licensure sometime during your final semester.
Instructions are posted at soe.ku.edu under Licensure.
If you are applying for a provisional license too (for example, in Special Education), you will have to get a
hardcopy of the Form 4 from Alisa (this is not available online). Each application costs $36-39.
Please keep in mind that applications will not be forwarded until grades are posted for all courses
and licensure exam scores have been received.
- If you are applying for certification/licensure outside of Kansas, read the instructions and timeline posted at http://soe.ku.edu/students/licensure/checklist.php. Download or request the application and instructions from the other state’s department of education. If you have any further questions, schedule an appointment with the Licensure Officer or email her at abranham@ku.edu.
